Long before "eco-friendly" and "zero-waste" became global buzzwords, Sri Lankan artisans were already masters of sustainable living. For generations, our creators have looked at the natural environment not as a resource to deplete, but as a partner in their craft.
Today, we are taking you behind the scenes to explore how everyday natural materials found across our island are transformed into the beautiful, sustainable masterpieces you see on Craftory.
The Coconut Shell: From Waste to Wonder
The coconut tree is often called the "Tree of Life" in Sri Lanka because every single part of it serves a purpose. However, the hard outer shells are frequently discarded. Our resourceful artisans have flipped this narrative, turning these discarded shells into highly durable, polished kitchenware and home decor.
Creating a single coconut shell spoon or bowl is a labor of love. The process involves:
Selecting and Cleaning: Only the thickest, most robust shells are chosen.
Carving and Sanding: Artisans spend hours manually sanding the rough exterior until it is perfectly smooth.
Polishing with Nature: Instead of using chemical varnishes, the shells are often polished with natural coconut oil, making them 100% food-safe and biodegradable.
When you use coconut shell cutlery, you aren't just making an eco-conscious choice; you are holding a piece of tropical artistry.
Sustainable Woodworking
Sri Lanka has a rich heritage of woodcarving, spanning from the ancient temples of Kandy to modern coastal workshops. Our artisans are deeply respectful of this heritage. Many of the wood products on Craftory are crafted using sustainably sourced or upcycled timber.
Take the native Kumbuk tree, for example. Historically known for its natural water-purifying properties, our artisans use its sturdy, beautiful timber to craft everyday items like drinking mugs. Whether it is a therapeutic wooden mug or an intricately carved table ornament, these pieces are designed to last a lifetime, pushing back against the modern culture of "throwaway" plastic goods.
